GETTING [TO DENMARK]

Tingbjerg Welfare City | 2015

International interest in Nordic welfare systems has intensified since the 2008 crash, with many leaders looking to Denmark for solutions on welfare provision. Francis Fukuyama even coined 'getting to Denmark' as a metaphor for achieving a functional welfare society.

Yet we see transformation afoot in Denmark too. Social housing areas like Tingbjerg have gained a damaging stigma since being listed on the controversial ‘Ghetto List,’ with the perception of residents as a drain on state resources. Can we envisage a future where ‘welfare tourism’ involves not exploitation of state funds but the exploration of innovative new welfare solutions? From August 2020 Tingbjerg will play host to the annual Festival of Denmark. The Municipality of Copenhagen invites you to immerse yourself in localised welfare solutions, including multi-generational housing.
